Screen time at work says less than you think
Screen time at work confuses actual work with escape from it — a lower number on the meter says almost nothing about how fragmented your day was. So read the correct metric instead.

Screen time at work, measured in minutes, says almost nothing about how fragmented or worn out your day actually was. No study shows that a lower screen time figure in itself leads to better work — the measure confuses time you actually needed your phone for (email, a calendar message, a quick Slack reply) with time you escaped to it when your concentration waned. What says much more about how fragmented your day was is how many times you picked up your phone, not how many minutes the screen was on.
Screen time confuses work and escape
A meter that only totals minutes can't tell the difference between why the screen was on. Fifteen minutes in a video conference, fifteen minutes in a spreadsheet on your phone, and fifteen minutes of scrolling between two heavy tasks all add up to the exact same number: forty-five minutes. For today's content, that doesn't mean anything.
That makes the total a bad target to chase. A high number could mean a job that requires a lot of phone use and still have been a good, focused day. A low number could hide ten short escapes, each short enough to barely show up on the meter, but still breaking up work ten times. Deciding to “cut down on screen time” without distinguishing between these two is optimizing for the wrong number.
The picks say more than the minutes
Instead, count how many times your phone was picked up during the workday. Ten picks ups of thirty seconds each add up to five minutes on the meter — but those are ten separate interruptions to what you were doing. A single thirty-minute call is six times as many minutes and yet zero interruptions in the middle of something else.
A screen time meter that only totals time sees these two days as different in minutes but doesn't say anything about which one actually split the work. The number of picks does. It's the number that describes how many times attention had to change direction, which is closer to what actually determines how a workday feels in retrospect.
Each pick costs more than the time it shows in the meter
This is not just a math example. Researcher Gloria Mark has long studied what happens when knowledge workers are interrupted in the middle of a task, and her recurring finding is that returning to full focus takes a significant amount of time — not the seconds the interruption itself was apparent, but considerably longer. A thirty-second look is registered as thirty seconds in the screen time app. The cost of actual focus is a completely different number, and it never shows up in the meter.
That's why ten short snatches can hurt a workday more than a single long, continuous screen time. The meter counts time. It doesn't count how many times attention was forced to restart.
The residue that remains after you put down your phone
There is a mechanism that explains why a brief glance costs so much: researcher Sophie Leroy coined the term attention residue . When you switch from one task to another, part of your attention follows the old task for a while. You are back at the spreadsheet, but a piece of your brain remains on the message you just read.
This is true even when the look was work-related. A quick Slack reply in the middle of a report leaves the same kind of residue as a scroll through social media — the difference is in the intent, not what happens in your head afterward. Count changes, not minutes
If you actually want to know something about your workday, change the measurement value:
- Count the picks, not the minutes. Most phones show the number of unlocks next to the screen time figure — that number is closer to the truth about how fragmented your day was.
- Label each check: work or escape? A check you did because the task required it is not the same as a check you did because you ran out of concentration. The screen time count sees them as identical, you don't have to.
- Care less about the total, more about the clustering. Many short, scattered pickings throughout a workday are worse for focus than the same total time collected in a few breaks.
None of these metrics require you to chase a lower total. They require you to stop relying on it as an answer.
