Screens don’t permanently destroy your concentration — they fragment it. The problem is rarely that your attention has shrunk to something irrevocably brief, but rather that it is constantly being fragmented by switching between tasks, notifications and the urge to check things. Every switch leaves a trace that makes the next moment of focus less effective. The good news is that, unlike an injury, fragmentation can be repaired.

The myth of the shrinking attention span

You’ve no doubt heard that the human attention span has fallen below that of a goldfish — some figure around eight seconds. It’s one of the most widespread and least substantiated claims on the whole subject.

Let’s be honest here: that figure has no credible scientific source. It has been passed from report to headline without anyone being able to point to the research behind it, and the idea that attention is even a single, fixed ‘span’ that can be measured in seconds is, moreover, an oversimplification. You can still watch a two-hour film or get lost in a book for hours — your capacity for sustained attention is clearly intact. So what is it, really, that makes it feel harder to focus?

The real problem: attention residue

The answer lies in what happens when you switch tasks. Researcher Sophie Leroy coined the term ‘attention residue’. When you jump from one thing to another, part of your attention lingers on the previous task for a while. You’re working on the report, but part of your brain is still on the message you’ve just read. The result: you’re never fully present in what you’re doing.

Now add a phone that invites you to switch every five minutes. Every notification, every urge to check, isn’t just the few seconds it takes to look — it’s the residue that lingers and clouds your focus long afterwards. ‘Multitasking’ barely exists for demanding tasks; the brain simply switches rapidly between them, paying a switching cost each time. The sum of enough of these switches is a day that feels fragmented and a concentration that never really takes hold — without anything actually having gone wrong.

Why it feels like damage (but isn’t)

When your focus is constantly fragmented, it’s easy to conclude that your ability has been destroyed. But the difference between fragmented and damaged is crucial, and it offers hope. Damage is permanent. Fragmentation ceases when the fragmentation itself stops.

What’s really happening is also a matter of habit: the brain has learnt to expect a change all the time, so it becomes restless during a slow, continuous task and looks for the next stimulus. It is the same mechanism that makes everyday life feel dull after very rapid, concentrated stimulation — the reference point has shifted. And just as in that case, it is reversible: give the brain fewer changes, and the tolerance for the slow will return.

How focus recovers

Concentration isn’t trained by gritting your teeth harder in the midst of distraction, but by removing the sources of distraction:

  • Eliminate the temptations to switch tasks. Turn off notifications and put your phone out of sight whilst you’re working. A phone on your desk draws attention even when switched off and silent — its mere presence costs you focus.
  • Work in uninterrupted blocks. Devote an uninterrupted period to a single task before allowing yourself to switch. This allows residual attention to settle rather than pile up.
  • Embrace the boredom. When restlessness strikes in the middle of a task, resist the urge to check your phone. Staying focused is the very exercise that rebuilds your stamina.
  • Protect your prime time. How much screen time is too much is less about hours and more about what it pushes aside — and fragmented concentration pushes aside your best work.
